Exchange 2010 DB not releasing unused space...

We made a new Exchange DB and are moving the users over to it. The space on the old one has not gone down and I know this has something to do with having to write new data into that space before it realizes it's gone in Exchange 2010, but I made a new mailbox and specified the old database and it still won't free up the space from moving half of the users.

How can I get the space back from this DB?

we ended up creating a new DB and moving the accounts to it and then decommissioning the old one.
