Column Alignment in Separate Tables + CSS

Question from a co-worker:
I have a table whose top row functions as a header. Recently, my boss asked that I make the header fixed so that it stays in place when scrolling down the page. I achieved this by breaking the header out into a separate table with a fixed position css style. However, if I resize the window, the columns in the header become unaligned with the columns in the table below. How can I correct this, aside from using pixel widths?
