Mac Recently Begins Freezing

I work on PCs during the day but I use a Mac during my personal time.  I use a MacBook Pro several years old.  It is connected to external monitor keyboard and mouse and virtually never gets disconnected (yes, I do have a laptop fan on under it).  I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.6.  It wants me to install 10.6.7 but have been hesitant to until I get feedback on this problem.

In the last 2-3 weeks, I have begun having a lot of freeze ups that almost never happened before.  Sometimes they happen in the night in the middle of a backup, but other nights the backup (using SuperDuper!) works fine.  Sometimes I walk into the room and see the screen saver (which also displays the time) stuck something like 3-5 hours ago.  I'm not sure what to do.  Although I love the Mac, I'm not as conversant as I am with fixing PCs.

Have you checked the HDD for errors or ran a memory test?

You also could download http://www.soft32.com/download_199513.html, it's a stress test for your CPU

Let me know

Cheers

Liquid
I ran the CPU stress test Liquid and it didn't error out though it was *only* a small test.  I had run DiskUtility on it before I posted this message and some permissions were fixed but it said that the disk was "ok."

arrkerr1024: It used to get hot, too hot, but hasn't in several months since I installed the laptop fan.  I don't really know which error log to access.  I don't know anything about writing a script and I did install the update.  No lockup since this thread was started.
After you reboot after a crash, look at the console log by opening console.app, found in /Applications/Utilties and see if there are any error messages just before the crash.

Do-you-have-one-RAM-module-or-two?

If-you-have-two,remove-one,test...if-the-error-persists-exchange-the-one-you-removed-with-the-one-you-kept....if-you-have-only-one,get-a-replacement-RAM-module(ebay)

Ok, I haven't tried the RAM tests yet.  I did wake up to a panic this morning.  Usually the computer freezes only but this time it had the message about having to shut down your computer.  The following is the error report it generated to send to Apple.

Based on your description of the issue, and the kernel panic you just got, this is most likely a memory or hard drive issue, as a previous user suggested.  The most likely culprit is the hard drive, but just to be sure you can try to rule out the memory first:

Run a utility called "memtest".. I think you have to pay about $1-2 for the program, but it's worth it.

http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php

If the memory tested out OK, the next step would be to pull the hard drive from the system and test it, or try a known good drive in the system.  If this is something you're uncomfortable with, or have never done this type of repair before, you may consider taking it in to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.  You can find one here:

http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/

Best of luck in finding a resolution!  Since you've been making back ups, it should be relatively painless to get all your data back.  I'm 90% sure you have an issue with your hard drive.. but test the memory first if you can, just to be sure.

Let us know what you find, and I hope this helps!
I  am running the memory test now on that computer.  I do feel comfortable pulling the hard drive out but an not sure how you would mean to test it.  Is there a utility like the memtest one that goes above and beyond file system structures such as Disk Utility.  I will not take it into Apple.  They would charge more than it is worth,
Apple authorized service centers typically charge much less than going to Apple directly.

There are a few different programs you can test the drive with.  Once you know what brand drive it is, each manufacturer has some of their own utilities available:

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/tophddiag.htm

Or you can purchase a utility such as Spinrite, Hard Drive Mechanic, or Tech Tool Pro to get a more thorough diagnosis.  Be prepared to spend $60-100 if you decide to purchase one of these applications.  Most repair shops will run a diagnostic for you for less, so if you choose to purchase an application, think about whether you might use it again or if this is a one time (or very infrequent) thing.

Good luck, let us know what you do!
Oh, one more thing.. If the hard drive is making loud squealing or clicking sounds, that's a good indication it's failing.. That's one of the reasons I suggest pulling it, if you have the technical ability to do so.
