Deleting backups to make space

We are using Symantec Backup Exec 2010 and our 3TB storage is full. I thought Backup Exchange was deleting old backups but I guess not.

Do I just move old media to retired and delete? I tried a few times but I don't see the files actually being deleted. Is there something I'm missing?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

To force Backup Exec to reuse (delete when required) the backup files, you would need to move them to Scratch media, not retired. Otherwise, you would have to delete them manually. You may want to revisit your media retention rules to make sure that you are allowing them to become overwritable in a reasonable amount of time. Otherwise, they will never be overwritten automatically by Backup Exec. We normally set daily differentials or incrementals to be overwritable in 6 days and the weekly and/or monthly backups for a similar length so that they are retained for no more than a month (for weeklies) or a year (for monthlies).
