Closing up shop in Backup Exec
We are changing backup solutions form BE to Acronis.
I need to clean up disk space.
I'd like to keep a few recent backups while we transition.
There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of items in media, and I've just found out that I'll need to delete manually since we didn't have overwrite correctly set.
Any easy way to do this?

Hi again challengeday! You should be able to delete them from the file system by date. If you simply sort your backup drive and folders by modified date, you should see clearly which ones are the oldest. If you're not going to be using Backup Exec in the future, you can skip the process of moving the media to a different media group; it won't matter in the long run. You might see them still listed in BE when you look at the offline media, but as I said, BE doesn't really care and you don't care if you're changing programs.

Thanks again hypercat!
I see both .bkf files at the root level of the backup folder and also IMG0000XX directories. Delete the oldest files at root and the oldest directories?
I'm also a little concerned because we have not had good backups for a while, so if there is an older good backup I figure it's better to keep than a newer bad backup. How can I relate a job to the correct files?

Just curious why you are getting rid of Backup Exec and going to Acronis?

We are a non-profit and we got a copy through Tech Soup and it comes with no tech support. We were not able to buy a separate tech support contract, which surprised me.
Steep learning curve. Could not get one good backup in months. When there is an error the only documentation for it seems to be forum posts.
Acronis also has a very reasonable offsite (online) backup offer or $500 per year for 1TB.
I installed Acronis, first backup was good.
This was on a server that we coldn't even get Windows Server Backup to backup system state (due to the drive being 3TB, and using MBR), so I was impressed.
Went to restore the Acronis backup as a test, ran into problems, got plenty of tech support.
Also, with Virtual Edition we'll be able to backup and automatically convert to a VM every night, meaning we have an immediate way to get our main server back up should it die for some reason.
