setting different overwrite periods for different days

we are running Backup Exec 2010 R2 with HD tapes for monday through friday. what we want to accomplish is to have the overwrite protection period be 1 week for monday through thursday, and 1 month for the friday backups.

where do i go to set the limits for individual days? do i have to set the overwrite limits for each of the drives or can i set an overall schedule through the console on the server?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I would setup 2 different media sets and assign the policies to them. Then you could assign media to the sets.

could you elaborate how i go about setting up multiple media sets and how i assign the media to those sets?

i'm very new to using this software.

Click Media, right click media sets, click new media set, drag and drop labeled media to the sets you want and set the policies you want to each set

If you get in the habit of quick-erasing tape before you reuse them you can set the media set on the job and not have to manually move media between sets.

We do things this way in our shop. We set the media sets to never overwrite and manually quick-erase tapes for reuse. That way a tape is never accidentally overwritten, and the jobs handle the media sets automatically.
