How to change document library templates for WSS 3.0?

Hi,

I am in SharePoint 3.0 and when I open the template.doc with MS Office 2007, the file is blank. I am on the Document Library Advanced Settings page and I clicked Edit Template. What I am trying to do is change the document library settings for versioning for all document libraries to have on a stie. These settings are different from the default settings. Is this the correct approach to modify a template for a document library, so that all document libraries have the same settings?

Thanks.

No, you're only changing the document template that a user will get when he clicks "New Document" in a document library.

I don't think there is a way to change the settings for all document libraries at once.  Document libraries can be created from templates, but after that they're separate and unique.  I tried changing and deleting content types that show up when a user clicked "New Document", but it only affected new Document Libraries, not the the ones that were already created.  It would only affect the Document Libraries if it tried to access a content type that had been deleted, instead of all the content types being deleted when it was removed from the main site.

Sorry.

The only way to do that is through code that updates each document library.

So, no global template exist that WSS 3.0 uses? I was thinking there is some file out there that could be modified, which SharePoint copies to use for new libraries.

You can save a document library as a template and use that for future libraries, but not for existing document libraries
