If your process runs through a number of steps, each of which takes some time
I think you can add additional step to the text on text area
as you go through your steps.

Say in the begining you say

jTextArea.setText("Starting...");

after first step you say:

String txt = jTextArea.getText();

jTextArea.set(txt + System.getProperty("line.separator") + "Starting First step...");

on the scond step:

txt = jTextArea.getText();

jTextArea.set(txt + System.getProperty("line.separator") + "Starting Second step...");

and so on...

You can also redirect System.out.println to JTextArea.
