Help with Goldmine Corporate Edition 6.7 dBase re-install on Windows XP Pro workstation that crashed?
Hi all, I have been asked to 'fix' a workstation that crashed which had Goldmine corporate edition 6.7 dbase on it. I know that Goldmine is installed on a server and the two workstations that had Goldmine on them both had mapped network drives which pointed to the server, and goldmine on the server is installed on a shared network drive. I am a bit confused because I am not an IT guy and when I open Goldmine on the server or the workstations, the data and reports are different on each machine? Anyways, the workstation that crashed has the 'correct' and most up to date data and reports on it. I can still access the goldmine program on the crashed workstation and can copy files and directories off it but I am very concerned about getting this re-installation correct. The workstation in question is a Dell Optiplex GX260 with Windows XP pro installed. I am going to have to reinstall the operating system clean after formatiing drive or put a new drive in and load windows xp. I can handle the basic clean install of windows and apps but am unsure of how to do the goldmine re-install and getting the data and reports back on the new machine. Please provide definitive instructions as I have never done this before. Thank you very much, all!

Thanks for the responses so far. Right now I am concerned about backing up the data from the workstation that I have to re-build and this data CANNOT be lost. I am assuming the data is on the workstation because each workstation has different data and reports. I need to save the data, save the reports, and save the customized fields that have been added to the fields tab. Can someone tell me what and how I should save before I go any further? Thanks!
The data isn't necessarily on the workstation(s). The pointers appear to be different for each machine, that's for sure, but you don't know (yet) where the data is, until you analyze those pointers. From within GoldMine on each machine go to Help | About | System, and look at the settings for GoldMine Files and Common Files. This is where your data is. These pointers are "aliases." The aliases are defined in the Borland Database Engine Administrator.

One more thought just occurred to me, could I just load a single workstation install on the computer I am going to re-build and then someone pull in the customization fields, data, and custom reports from my backups? This would give me a single workstation install which is all we need but can I do this with Goldmine dbase Corporate Edition 6.7? All help is appreciated, thanks.

stevengraff, thanks. I do not have the workstation in question hooked up right this moment but I did query the server where I thought Goldmine was installed. I signed into Goldmine on the server as master and copied the system screen, which I attached. Thanks for all your help, I am losing sleep over this problem because are counting on me. Thanks. Yep; it's messed up. Your g: drive stuff is probably fine, but a large part of GoldMine resides in that gmbase folder, and it doesn't look like you've got it shared. You need for someone to come in and
a. set it up right
b. sync and consolidate your various different data sets

stevengraff, so this is beyond me then. What do you think it would cost to have this done and can our customization and data be saved? Thanks

stevengraff, after further investigation today, I found two seemingly identical goldmine 6.7 installation disks, two user licenses, and the only computers in our organization that have goldmine installed are the windows server, and the workstation that has crashed. So that means that I need goldmine only installed on one workstation but would want the data to be saved on the server. This seems to be a little simpler than I originally thought. The workstation can still be used but the operating system is corrupted and will sometimes freeze up and disconnect network drives. I did a 'full' backup of everything that goldmine allows you to backup using the wizard and have stored it safely on the network. I read somewhere though that this kind of backup is not that reliable and would like to know if I should just backup entire directories off the workstation. Can you help me with this question? Thanks. Also, stevengraff, are you available to do the kind of work we need to get back up and running with our existing data, custom fields, and custom reports?

One more thing, I keep referring to the version I have as goldmine corporate edition 6.7 but ours is not the sql version, to be clear, ours is actually goldmine 6.7 standard edition, most definitely the dBase version. Sorry if I mislead anyone. Thanks.
mjchevalier, your GoldMine backup may be good, I wouldn't discount that entirely. Though, yes, it's true, it's not the best method.
You need to get all the data onto the server, and some of it was on the workstation, right?
EE rules prohibit solicitation on the site. They're very strict about that. However, nothing prevents one from clicking in to someone's profile to discover direct contact information.

You may want to get in touch with a GoldMine Solutions Partner to help you with this, someone who can come in, physically or remotely, and take a look at how your systems have been (mis?)configured.
