Using RDC on a Mac with SBS 2003

I have a client who recently purchased a mac for her home. She has RDC installed on the Mac and wants to remote into her work laptop (Windows 7 Pro connected to a SBS2003). I cannot figure out how to set this up as there is no option (that I'm aware of) in the settings thats lets you choose the computer name.

From what I read, it seems this is not possible BUT, I have another client who does the exact same thing and it works perfect.

Any suggestions?

Set up the connection preferences, screen size etc. Then connect to the remote computer using the IP address.

When you start up the RDP client on the macintosh (make sure this is the Microsoft RDP (remote connection) application). Download the latest from Microsoft website.

When you start the app it opens a window and has a box for the IP address or FQDN of the remote computer.
btw, I do this all the time at work to our Windows servers and use the FQDN of the server which is in our DNS.

What IP address would I use?

We can connect to the network using the public ip address but we need to hit the individual computer on the internal/private network.

Are there 2 spots for different ips?
do you have externally addressable computers? I presume the remote computer is actually at work and the user is at home?

Do they have VPN access set up?  If not you would need to do IP forwarding through the firewall - presuming this is in place?

all the computers inside the network are using 192.168.2.x subnet.

remote computer is at work, user is at home

She does not have VPN currently setup (which may be the key here)

What's throwing me off is the other client of mine that this works perfect for and I know 100% he is not connecting with a VPN - but if that is what it takes, I can set her up like that.
You need to set up port forwarding on the firewall/router so that RDP is forwarded to the clients laptop.

Wouldn't that affect the other 40 people in the office?
or are you suggesting to setup a special port for her to use?
I presumed your client had full control of their network.. ..You could set up a custom port so that both RDP on the mac and the laptop are using that unique port and only that port is forwarded to the laptop.
You have a couple of choices. You could RDP into the server then run RDP on the server to connect to the work station, but this is not a very good solution.

If you have a VPN, just VPN in and use the RDC client to connect to the local IP address of the work station. Macs have a built-in VPN client. I use the second solution and it works quite well.
