Dns
Here's my scenario, My windows 2003 server is also the active directory server. All of a sudden DNS stopped working and was not able to get to the Internet. This server also acts as the DNS Server.
I restarted Dns on the server but no luck. I then tried to ping the router and it gave me a hardware error. I assigned thee was a problem with the NiC so I disabled the NiC on the server ending in 218 changed the ip address to 220 and then enables the 2nd NiC and changed it's ip to 218 which is the dns address originally used. Then inwas able to get to the Internet. So I then tested another computer on the same network and they still couldn't get on the Inter
The windows 2003 Server has multiple Nics so
I changed to NiC #2 and chained the ip address
to the 218. I was then able to browse the Internet
I again tried another computer and it was still not
able to Browse the internet or ping the Server
Dns just was not working . So then I turned routing
And Remote Access of and everything worked
fine. All computers are able to browse Internet
and get to the Server. I know the routing and DNS
are related but just don't know how to fix this.
I have a few users that use Routing and Remote
Acccess as part of their daily workflow so I need
To resolve this ASAP. Can you please give me
Specific instructions on what is the best way
To resolve. Thanks in Advance

Hi,
1 - Have you enabled the RRAS service on the AD machine or is it running on another one.
2 - What config have you done on your RRAS (This will help us determine what could be the issue)
3- Have you configured any forwarders in your DNS or the DNS server has a direct connection to the internet (Just want to confirm how does your local dns connects to the internet DNS)
Note: you can always verify if the DNS can resolve internet addresses by using nslookup command

Ok original NiC was .218 and the second NiC
.219. When I did the switch I just changed the
Numbers accordingly.
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Listening DNS .218

Gneral- Enable as Router enabled and Lan and demand dial routning Remote access server enabled
Security- Windows authentifiacation
Ip- Enable IP Routing - Allow ip based remote access
This server can assign ip addresses using DHCP
Adapter Local area connection 2( this is where I changed to the new Nic)
PPP-Multilink connection Dynamic Bandwith Link control protocaol and Software compression all enabled
3- Have you configured any forwarders in your DNS or the DNS server has a direct connection to the internet (Just want to confirm how does your local dns connects to the internet DNS
DNS connected through a router and the forwarder is 4.2.2.2.

still confused about your scenario :)
have you configured NAT on RRAS for users to use internet or the NAT is configured at the modem / router?

ASKER
Nat is configured at the router.
so the only setting needed on the RRAS Server is for VPN connection right?
ASKER
That is correct.
Well I cannot figure out what is the issue when you enable the RRAS, so I would suggest using some other VPN technology for remote access. Logmein hamachi s a good solution I think you should try it.

I don't mean to be difficult but I would like to know
Why this is not working. If I reinstall routing and
Remote access what will the implications be?

well I don't know if its appropriate but I can help you by taking remote session of your server.
Its too difficult to guess what could be the issue without access to the server.
