Excel is Highlighting too many cells

When in Excel, I try to click on a cell.  Instead of highlighting one cell, it highlights 3 cells. I am trying to merge 2 cells, but I am unable to select just those two cells.

 How can I fix this?

Sounds like you either accidentally (or thru cut&paste) created merged cells. Try unmerging them first.

Click in the first cell of the range to highlight it. Hold down the shift key and use the arrow keys to highlight the other cells in the range. If you are still highlighting the 3 cells, it sounds like some have already been merged.

Unfortunately, I have not merged any cells yet.   Anywhere I click, it highlights 3 cells instead of one

At the bottom left of the screen, below the workbook. Tell me what it says there. It should start with the word "Ready".

I switched views and I can now select single cells.  Thank you
