How can I Block Time Machine and Mobile Home Folder Sync over VPN?

I do want Time Machine and Mobile Home Folder Sync to run when the user is in the office. I do not want either to run over a VPN connection.

Is there a way to configure this? Server and client are both Snow Leopard (10.6.x)

I know that this can be manually controlled by the user. That is not a satisfactory solution.

Unfortunately, there is no other solution.

However, why use Time machine on the client computers, if you have mobile homes being sync'd?

I would suggest you disable time machije on the clients and only use Time Machine on the server.

As for mobile home syncing, allowing this to occur over VPN should not be a big issue because after the initial sync, ythe amount of data that chanes on the user's desktop should be relatively small.

Also, you can aggressively configure the type of files and data locations that can be sync'd, which further reduces mobile sync times when users are remote.

1. It may be that the amount of data changing is small, but the logout sync over the VPN takes a very long time and then the system also seems to stall on compacting the filevault home directory - I think this is still the logout sync causing trouble.
2. Time Machine is not backing up the user's home folder, only the /documents folder. Parenthetically, we are not satisfied to rely on mobile home sync for backup and are also backing up the home folder with something else.

Any ideas to manage this better would be welcome.

Disable the synce at logout.  You systems are probably disconnecting their VPN connection and possibly causing logout sync issues.
