ichat over internet

Small office with about 20 macs running osx server want to be able to communicate via ichat over the internet with their LA office but are unable to do so.  What is required, does ichat server need to be enabled to allow that or is it simply opening ports on the server to allow it flow through

Thanks

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This is sort of a "30,000 foot view," but you essentially have three options. These vary in how much work they take to set up and maintain.

Broad Overview of Options:

If only one office is running Mac OS X Server, you could:
  - Enable the iChat service on that server;
  - Poke the appropriate holes in the server site's firewall to allow iChat traffic;
  - Create accounts on that server for the remote users; and
  - Configure the iChat application at the remote site to connect to this site's server.

If both sites are running Mac OS X Server, you could follow the same steps as above, or:
  - Enable the iChat service on both servers;
  - Poke the appropriate holes in the firewalls to allow iChat traffic; and
  - Federate the two iChat servers.

If you don't feel like managing one or two chat servers, you could:
  - Set up free iChat accounts on MobileMe for all users, and provide them with their credentials. The iChat app can generally find its way through a firewall to talk to the MobileMe servers without any intervention on your part.
