Symantec EV 8.0 SP4 always causing the Exchange Server 2007 SP1 transaction log to fill up quickly ?

Hi Everyone,

I'm still confused and don't understand of why my Exchange Server 2007 SP1 transaction log always fills up quickly when the Symantec Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP4 executes the weekend archiving job ?

in my previous diagnostic steps I have done the following actions:

1. Pin point the shared mailbox (SharedMailbox1) that cause the problem in Storage Group 1 and then move the Shared mailbox onto Storage Group 2, after several weekend yes the problem arise again in the Storage Group 2.

2. Export the old SharedMailbox1 content, disable the SharedMailbox1 (mark as delete), create new one with the same name (including aliases and its permissions) and then importing the exported content into the new one.

Somehow the transaction log still growth uncontrollably and always 90% full in the weekend? in which I believe there were very low email traffic in my company.

Any suggestion and help would be greatly appreciated.

How often do you perform Exchange backups?

How are you doing your archiving? How are you backing up your Enterprise Vault Server?  Are you doing archiving or journaling as well?

How do you backup your Enterprise Vault Server?

since my EV Server is a VM I back it up using HP Data protector and then I followed the instructions to generate the pre and post backup powershell script.

yes, you are right Paul, here's another finding that I found: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH128522

it seems that I need to disable the "Moved Items" feature in my EV server after all.
You may also wan to restrict the amount of time EV is archiving over the weekend.  It may be better to do smaller windows during the week, this way the logs are smaller and get cleared up after the backup.

Is this a new install with the initial ingestion or are you only getting delta of one day after the initial ingestion has taken place?

Actually the problem has been around since many moons ago before I join this company so I am now left in dark without any clear reason why the weekend archive always causing the transaction log always full.
How much data are you archiving daily vs on weekends?  If your're only archiving weekends or mostly on weekends then you could be getting much more data then you would otherwise.  You can run the archive job in report mode to get a better idea of how much data you should get when you archive per mailbox policy.

I have done project that get 5GB of mail per day and never had issues with logs files if the backups were done daily and the intial ingestion completed successfully.
