Installing 3Ware9550 driver on ESXi 4

This is from the LSI Knowledge Base and I've followed these instructions, yet I cannot get the 3Ware driver for my 3Ware 9550 controller card to load.  See the error I'm getting at the end:

VMWare ESXi4.0/4.0 update 1:
(RAID Device can only be Secondary Storage)

1). Install 3ware RAID Controller, drives and define RAID Unit(s).
2). Boot from the ESXi 4.0/4.0 update 1 Installation Media and install to Primary Hard Drive. I have an IDE drive installed in addition to the 3Ware controller card.

3). Once completed take note of the IP address or hostname of the ESXi server and make sure you can ping the host.

4). From the Windows system, download and install the combination VMware vSphere Client/CLI Version 4.0.0-161974.

5). Download and install the VMWare-viclient 4.0.0-162856

6). Insert the 3ware Driver CDROM or medium that contains the driver file. Copy the file, 'AMCC_2.26.08.035vm40-offline_bundle-265875.zip'
to the root of C:\ e.g. C:\AMCC_2.26.08.035vm40-offline_bundle-265875.zip.

7). Launch the vSphere Client providing the credentials for root.

8). Put the ESXi server into Maintenance Mode from Vsphere Client.
(Double click on Inventory-->Click Summary tab-->click Enter Maintenance Mode.)

9). Go to Programs>VMware> and launch the vSphere CLI.

10). You should have a command prompt showing the following path, 'C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI'

11). Change directory to bin e.g. 'cd bin'

12). Now enter the following command via the VMware CLI:
perl vihostupdate.pl -server x.x.x.x -username root -password "" -b c:\AMCC_2.26.08.035vm40-offline_bundle-265875.zip -i

At this point, I get "host was not updated, no changes required. Skipping bulletin AMCC-2.26.08.035vm40; it is installed or obsoleted.

It drops me to a CLI\bin prompt.  I reboot ESXi and the 3Ware driver never loads and I can't see the 500 GB drives attached to the controller.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Jim

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. try the following

1. Put ESXi into maintenance mode.
2. Copy the zip file to /tmp on your ESXi host using Veeam FastSCP
3. at the command prompt (using putty)

# esxupdate  --bundle=/tmp/AMCC_2.26.08.035vm40-offline_bundle-265875.zip update

also ensure you are using the correct bundle for ESXi.

Are you installing ESXi 4.0 or 4.1?

atekcomputerSenior Network EngineerAuthor Commented:
ESXi 4.1...  this file should work with it... it says it on the LSI site.

do I do the copy from my Windows server or directly on the ESXi host?
I'm a novice at this...  if you elaborate a little would be great.  thanks!

and quickly try renaming AMCC_2.26.08.035vm40-offline_bundle-265875.zip to offline-bundle.zip

and then

perl vihostupdate.pl -server x.x.x.x -username root -password "" -b c:\offline_bundle.zip -i

Acronis True Image 2019 just released!

Create a reliable backup. Make sure you always have dependable copies of your data so you can restore your entire system or individual files.

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
okay, it would help us, if you are specific about ESXi versions, as you state ESXi 4.0 (which is a different version to ESXi 4.1!).

Install Veeam FastSCP (free download), and Putty and you'll need to copy the file to the ESXi host.

but quickly try the other suggestion about renaming the bundle.

You'll also need to enable Remote Tech Support, from vSphere Client on your ESXi host. Select the host and configuration,  (see here for that kb.vmware.com/kb/1017910)

Cool...  i'm connected via Putty, but I installed FastSCP, connected, it shows "datastore1", yet nothing in it.

the IP of the server is 192.168.10.15, so it shows
"192.168.10.15"
   "[datastore1]"

nothing under it......

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
well that's normal for nothing in datastore1 if you have no VMs created in the datastore.

when you connect to the ESXi server using the vSphere Client, select Configuration, Storage Adaptors, does it show the 3Ware9550 storage controller.

and if you check Storage, does it show the datastore and size?

atekcomputerSenior Network EngineerAuthor Commented:
how do I get to "/tmp" to copy the offline_bundle.zip to it?  Do I use FastSCP for that?

it doesn't show the 3Ware controller under Configuration,  I can't get the driver loaded.

it shows:
AMD 8111 IDE/PATA Controller
has the CD-ROM & 30 GB IDE drive

and

iSCSI Software Adapter
nothing in it

Under Storage, it shows datastore1 with 23 GB in size, which is the 30 GB IDE drive I have ESXi 4.1 installed on it.

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
yes, you use Veeam FastFCP to copy to /tmp.

(all for 125 points! he he!)

atekcomputerSenior Network EngineerAuthor Commented:
I will give you the 125, but how do I copy the "offline_bundle.zip" file to the ESXi host via Fast SCP?

Per my previous post, I don't see any file structure when I connect via SCP.

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
if you click the root /, FastSCP should show the entire directory structure.

atekcomputerSenior Network EngineerAuthor Commented:
I've attached a screenshot so you can see what I mean....  root isn't there...

if I right click on datastore1, I get the options, "Expand",  "New Folder" & "copy".  clicking Expand does nothing.

Install and use WinSCP and connect to the ESXi server.

I was able to use WinSCP to copy the offline_bundle.zip to /tmp on the ESXi server.

I executed the command:

~ # esxupdate -bundle=/tmp/offline_bundle2.zip update

This message came up:

Thanks for your help hanccocka, but I'm abandoning this because it's just not working.

I have an IDE drive connected to the server, which it recognizes, so I'm going to use that instead of trying to get ESXi to recognize the 3Ware.  What a pain in the a** this is!!!

Why is ESXi so limited in the hardware that it will work with?

Thanks again for the help,
Jim

By design, it's designed for Server Class hardware.

If this card is on the HCL, additional drivers should be able to be installed.

I suspect VMware has tried to keep the footprint of the installation down so that it can be installed on embedded hardware, if we had all the drivers in the installation, it would be as large as a Windows 2008 R2 installation, and SD/USB drive installation for embedded would not work.

If you want to post the 3Ware card to us, we'll experiment with it, and document to get it working!

I bought a server with this card on eBay and the seller said it would work.... I'm just not an Linux expert which I believe is required to get this card to work.  I keep getting error upon error, so I give up.

I'm new to VMWare but not to IT.  If you ask me, if Microsoft keeps up with Hyper-V Server, they'll surpass VMWare in the next few years.  I saw this back in the 90's when Novell's Netware was the pioneer in server operating systems, yet it was pricey and ran on certain hardware as well.  Look what happened, Microsoft over took them and Netware is hardly used any more.  I'm sure VMWare will be in enterprise environments, but if they don't expand their HCL and make it more "Windows" friendly for people like myself, Hyper-V will surpass them.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

fyi - ESXi is not Linux.

We wouldn't have advised you to purchase this card, if you had purchased from a VMware Reseller, Partner or Consultancy.

Ask the eBay seller, for advice on how to install, if they stated it would work. They probably just looked at the documents, (and assumed working, but had no real experience of the card). Under (UK) Sales of Goods Act, it wouldn't be fit for purpose. If you want to post the card to us, we can test and document, but no guarantees.

Novell eDirectory is still used today, in large enterprised where it has it's strengths.
