Proliant DL 380 G4 Smart Start CD for Windows 2008 Server

I have HP Proliant DL 380 G4 Servers, i want to install windows server 2008 R2 x64
I have a smart start cd of HP but it is old version and it doesnot support win 2008, I downloaded iso image for latest smart start from HP website, the instructions to use the cd are

“Note: Simply copying the ISO file to a CD-R will NOT result in a usable CD. HP recommends you run MD5 Checksum on the Zip file and/or ISO image prior to burning the CD. HP also recommends that you turn the verify feature “ON”.
i have burnt .iso files 10 times today but the cd doesnot boot on the server, can anyone help that how shall i use these files ??

Why should you use those cds?
Just boot your server with Win2008 installation media ...
Make sure your hardware is 64bit capable! (I'm not sure about G4)
Might be a good idea to upgrade your bios etc prior to install.

If your server is under warranty you can go here and get the latest version of SmartStart:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=344318&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18964&prodSeriesId=345557&lang=en&cc=us

When you go to burn the CD drop the burn speed down instead of using max or auto.  Sometimes multimedia disks have issues with the higher burn speeds.  I'd recommend Image Burn which is a free software if you want to try a secondary option.

As for the server firmware and physical drivers you will need to download them from here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3288132&taskId=135&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=397634&lang=en&cc=us

All the instructions will be provided by HP.

The ISO for Server 2008 is a DVD image, not CD, but you should have seen an error message trying to write something that large to a CD.

Also, you need to use software like ImgBurn to write the image to a blank DVD.  Simply burning the file to a blank doesn't work...you have to write the image.

Not sure where you are with the above info, but you can also configure the RAID during POST.  The controller has its own BIOS.

As i HP mentioned above that we have to run MD5 Checksum, i already matched it using Marxio FVC software....I think it will take CD not DVD coz the size of the image is 640MB, therefore i am burning the CD using IMG Burn , will try that in server and let you know in next post...

I booted to SBS 2008 and ran the installation without using a Smart Start CD.  I also have a DL380 G4 with DVD/ROM and integrated RAID controller.

IIRC, I configured the RAID via the boot ROM on the controller, but I can't swear to it.  That's normally what I do on servers and workstations with RAID...configure them first, and they present themselves as volumes to the OS installer.  It's been a couple of years since that happened on this HP

Not sure why you can't get the server to boot from a bootable CD.  I haven't had any problems unless the drive is damaged/dirty.  Are you sure the DVD drive is fully functional?  Can you boot it from an USB CD/DVD?

Sounds like you've got a bad batch of blank CDs, or a oversize (700MB)...or a bad burn of the ISO image.

But, if you say you can take the burned CD and boot it in another computer, I'm not sure where to go.  If it were me, I'd first try to configure the RAID without booting to any CD/DVD first.  If you can configure the RAID properly, then burn a DVD of the server installer and try from there.

Sorry, I can' remember that far back to know if I reconfigured the RAID before install, or if I had already configured it from a prior OS installation.

Which firmware are you talking about?  There is one for the motherboard BIOS, one for the RAID controller, and one for the CD/DVD drive.  I had updated those with a prior install of Server 2003 before I started the project of putting 2008 on the machine.
