I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Try to avoid LoadVars, it's not necessarily the best approach.

You can easily do that with the XML class.

var myXML:XML = new XML();

myXML.ignoreWhite = true;
myXML.load("http://127.0.0.1/data.asp"); //it's imperative that it's a live server, otherwise it'll never work.
myXML.onLoad = function(success)
{
  if(success)
  {
     trace(this);
  }
  else
  {
     trace("load error");
  }
}

Good luck.

Here is what I have...This is attaced to a move next button

function amount_go_next1():Void{

myXML.load("http://localhost/data/data.asp"); //it's imperative that it's a live server, otherwise it'll never work.
myXML.onLoad = function(success)
{

                for(var i=0; i<this.cont; i++){
                    this.ref["Main_num.q_lbl"+i].text = this["QUESTION"+i]
                              trace(this);

Big Business Goals? Which KPIs Will Help You

The most successful MSPs rely on metrics – known as key performance indicators (KPIs) – for making informed decisions that help their businesses thrive, rather than just survive. This eBook provides an overview of the most important KPIs used by top MSPs.

First the only thing you need to show is that it's actually receiving the data. (Hence the trace(this); call).

May I ask what the output is when you open "http://localhost/data/data.asp" on your browser? is it really an XML?

Yes it is an XML file. Here is the situation, I have a screen that has an input field and a dynamic textbox. The dynamic textbox(question_txt) is what is beiing populated.

The answer, some number, is then uploaded back to the same table which has a field, "Answer."

Baxters801Author Commented:
We are definitely getting somewhere...When I run click on the next button the output screen displays the entire xml file when I comment out the for loop

Antonio EstradaTech Leader / Senior Web DeveloperCommented:
Ok, very good, now the idea is to iterate through the XML tree and find out the elements you are looking for.

Check this place out, if has a very good description of the firstChild, childNodes[x], nodeValue, attributes, etc members of the XML class, this will definitely help you get the values you need.

I inherited this app that is why I am a bit all over the place. It is so frustrating. The application is using a dataset and xmlconnector to bring the data in from access.

Inheriting projects can prove to be tough, I'm with you there.

But you can use a different approach like the one I provided in order to ease the transition. If you need further assistance or clarification please let me know.

Cool, well what i need is to get the field of (question) from table data to populate the qestion text box until all of the records that have a value of Y in the field "evaluate" have been read.

The question has a numeerical response which is in a dynamic textbox. Once the user chooses the number, thenext button is clicked, the database is updated with answer, and then the next question is selected.....

Can you show me the XML the ASP generates?

Baxters801Author Commented:
Th ank you very much for your response, I really cant show the xml file....Is there another way we can approach this?
0
Antonio EstradaTech Leader / Senior Web DeveloperCommented:
No. In order to provide you with the code I'd need to see what is being generated, perhaps if you change the values that are sensitive information for whatever else.

Otherwise I'd ask you to check and re-check the link I provided before, it includes all the information you need to be able to consume any given XML with any kind of structure.

Good luck.

Ok, I had to modify the xml a bit, since it's not including a schema thus none of the elements will work.

wow, thank you for all of your work...The problem is the xml ouput from the asp file is what I originally sent. The asp file pulls in the data from an Access database.
I only need to display the question, i can get that from your code....thank you for all of your time...

It should work fine anyway, I just created that "file.xml" without the custom tags so it could validate vs Explorer or Chrome (and visualize it on the browser), AND to fix an issue with it.

This is the issue:

<z:row Q_ID="13" QUESTION_NUM="13" OPTION="0" SUB_QUESTION_NUM="0" QUESTION="Question2"?" OPTION_NUMERICAL="Y" OPTION_1="0" OPTION_2="1-3" OPTION_3="4-6" OPTION_4="7 or above" P_ANSWER_NUM="9"/>

<z:row Q_ID="16" QUESTION_NUM="16" OPTION="0" SUB_QUESTION_NUM="0" QUESTION="Question3"?" OPTION_NUMERICAL="Y" OPTION_1="0" OPTION_2="1-3" OPTION_3="4-6" OPTION_4="7 or above" P_ANSWER_NUM="9"/>

Open in new window

The question mark is outside the quotation marks and that generates an XML parsing error. it still works, but it truncates the output.

It should be this instead:

<z:row Q_ID="13" QUESTION_NUM="13" OPTION="0" SUB_QUESTION_NUM="0" QUESTION="Question2?" OPTION_NUMERICAL="Y" OPTION_1="0" OPTION_2="1-3" OPTION_3="4-6" OPTION_4="7 or above" P_ANSWER_NUM="9"/>

<z:row Q_ID="16" QUESTION_NUM="16" OPTION="0" SUB_QUESTION_NUM="0" QUESTION="Question3?" OPTION_NUMERICAL="Y" OPTION_1="0" OPTION_2="1-3" OPTION_3="4-6" OPTION_4="7 or above" P_ANSWER_NUM="9"/>

This is the output if I use your original file (with the error fixed):
