MAPI32.dll wrong version ESM error

Good afternoon (or whatever time of day it is where you are),

getting the MAPI32.dll wrong version error on Exchange 2003. I have an old Exchange server that I am about to decommission. It has not been running exchange services for about a year now. Can I copy that MAPI32.dll file and paste it into the new exchange server's directory (after renaming the MAPI32.dll file on the new server)? The version on the old exchange server is newer and I don't get an error when I open ESM on the old box. The file sizes are the same if that matters.

Thanks for the help

Replacing dll file from working exchange server may resolve this issue.

If doesn't worked try installing/reinstallaing service pack 2.
1. You will  need to unregister the current mapi32.dll on your machine.
From the command line: registry /u mapi32.dll

2. Then copy the mapi32.dll from the 2003 CD to the same location as the old MAPI. (or get it from your other machine)

3. Register the .dll from the command line: regsvr32 mapi32.dll

I would not use the CD version, as it is most likely unpatched.  Use the map32.dll from your retired server as the source instead of the CD, but otherwise, lucid8's directions were spot on.

haven't done this yet. will post back when completed. I suspect lucid8's comment will do the trick using the working MAPI file from the other exchange server.
