Reverse DNS question

Hi,

We are shortly going to start a newsletter campaign and want to limit any possible losses to spam filters as much as possible (this is not spamming, it is simply emailing out to our members who have all opted in). We have a Virtual Private Server. There are two parts to my question -

1) How does one go about configuring Reverse DNS correctly? I have a subdomain set up e.g. mail.mydomain.com pointing to our IP address, but everytime I use a Reverse DNS check tool, it comes up with the default domain name that came with our package (which is also pointing to the same IP address and there seems no way to change that). Do I need another IP address?

2) What else should I be thinking about to avoid spam filters?

Thanks in advance

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If your ISP hasn't given you control to amend rDNS, it's best to contact them.  Give them the public IP and the rDNS you want (example: mail.mydomain.com).

As hayborne states in almost all cases the ISP is the one handling reverse records for their IP addresses, and they would be who you would need to contact.
