I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Try the lsslot command.

Use man pages for your options.
As "padmin" on VIO (I assume that's the partition owning the "real" slots):

lsdev -vpd -dev ent0

The first (as well as the last) line will show something like:

ent0  U7879.001.DQD0ATP-P1-C3-T1  Gigabit Ethernet-SX PCI-X Adapter (14106802)

The bolded values conatin the required info:

DQD0ATP - Serial no. of the drawer (should be sticked somewhere on the rear of the box).
T1 - Port of the adapter
C3 - Slot 3 (is labeled at the rear of the box)

If Cx is missing it's an onboard adapter. Tx then means the internal port on the mainboard.

P1 - means PCI bus 1, by the way.

On a non-VIO (AIX) partition issue

lscfg -vpl ento

to get a similar output.

The format of lsslot, as mentioned above, is:

lsslot -c pci -l ent0

"lsslot" works only for hot-plug capable slots, and does not work on VIO (ioscli).
