"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Depends on what the purpose of the ftp server is. If it is a publicly accessible server then put it in DMZ if it is only for internal use then LAN should be fine

Very often there is a need to exchange file with people out of your network.
Hence putting the server at DMZ would give you that flexibility.
Both the internal users could access the DMZ and be able to share the files.
File could still be shared via the FTP by your LAN users from the DMZ zone.
