I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

That depends a lot on the application you are building. If its simple enough, a cross platform development tool might work. Like this one:

http://rhomobile.com/

We've never used it though, building on native platforms produces much better applications.

A lot will depend on what hardware features your want your app to use. If you are just displaying data, graphics, etc. then an app generator or HTML 5 should be efficient. If you want to use the GPS or accelerometer or plan to collect data and store it on the phone with Core Data and, perhaps, eMail that data to someone or push it to a web service then you'll need to develop a true iPhone app and not just a web page.

Really very little hardware support is needed, I would like access to the file system to store offline files. But is it possible to have Rhomoblie to access the phone hardware to get the number of the phone. Would like to use this feature as an added security to identify the user. Or is there another mechanism that can be used with Rhomobile to identify the user besids having the user enter
in their user/password credentials.

Thanks In Advance
