Table of Contents and Figures in Open Office

I am writing a thesis and that has strict page formatting deadlines.  I have plans for a three level chapter organizational scheme and I have scores of image files that I am trying to get auto-numbered captions for.  I am unclear how to use the Navigator functionality to mold the table of context as well as get the ToC to be numbered in lower case roman numerals (i,ii,iii,...) while the main body is regular arabic numbers.  

How do I accomplish creating such an infrastructure so I don't have to worry about all these numberings?

Hi kayvey,

If you could give a manually numbered example of the heading numbering
style you want to use, it would be helpful.

(the mismatch seems to be due to the fact that the .doc was created with OO rather than MS Word!)

uh... first um.. well.. let's see if I can upload what I have.  A big issue for me right now is the caption numbering.. I have to ToC infrastructure, so I do want to fix that.. but I thought I was making progress when I added a caption called "Figure 1" to page 9.. I already added the image.. then I wanted to get to page 10 and call it "Figure 2" and let the numbering system do that.. but it was going to call it FIgure 1 again.. Not sure if that is what I want.. I think I need.. uh.. I'll attach a document that tells me how I must format it.. I want to keep my two level chapter/section system.. Chapter 1, Chapter 2, 2.1 2.1.1 two levels like I have it.. but the area of the paper that .. well.. it's in the document.. thesis sample pages document pdf.. the odt file is my paper I need to format according to the deadlines.

I meant to mention the figure part in the question..

I said "I have to ToC infrastructure" I meant "I have NO ToC infrastructure"
OK - I'm about to go out for the evening, but I'll have a look at it tomorrow. What you have to do is change the styles of  Chapters, Sub-chapters and Sub-sub-chapters to from Normal to Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3 respectively.

Use the default styles of OO, then modify the styles to suit your needs....

Will look at figures/diagrams tomorrow!

OK.. an additional note.. well.. maybe it's obvious that the thing isn't finished. I will be adding.. hopefully not new chapters but for sure new subchapters probably both levels, and maybe also deleting them.  I will be adding more content and maybe deleting some.  I wrote like 35 pages in January.. and since then I have been understanding those writers depicted in movies holed up in a house struggling with a book for years on end getting nothing done..

Deciding that I must fix the formatting to fit what the software can do for me because I finally made my first figure legend and that is a big thing because referring to figures in the text has been feeling cumbersome.  

Anyway.. I noticed in the guidelines that I am supposed to create a few pages in the Roman numeralled section that are COUNTED as page i, ii, iii, but SHOULD NOT PRINT the page number.. only on page iv (or v) it says that it starts printing or something... uh..

well.. I will take a look at that stuff and reward you when I feel fair about it.  Thank you for your attention.

I'm feeling unclear about how this is saving work.  It seems like it is just more work. It seems like you started over and now I have to add a lot more in there.  Why do I not just want to do all this manually?

I'm sorry.  Just doing it for me is not feeling like it is helping me.  I see that the navigator thing has stuff in it now.  This whole mess has been a disaster for me all semester.  I haven't been able to accomplish much at all.  It is very depressing.  I open it up and I just move to another workspace and play cards  {:( THis is just a disaster.  It feels like this thing is just beating me over the head and knocking me out or something.  I am not trying to justify myself.  My will on this is just broken.  
I wouold suggest you find (and be willing to pay) someone to correctly format your final document. That way you can concentrate on the subject matter...
