Word 2007 Page numbering ..

An author friend of mine has finally traded in her old laptop (XP/Office 2003) for a new Vaio with W7HP and Office 2007,,,

One problem, with 2003, the page number in a document would show the actual page number, i.e if she was looking at Page 4 of Chapter 7 it would perhaps say Page 152, whereas now in Office 2007 it shows 4 of 21, assuming Chapter 7 has 21 pages..

is there any way to change this?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can manipulate the way page numbering is displayed by right-clicking in the status bar area to Customize Status Bar.

right-click the Status bar (the bottom of the Word window) and pop up the list of items to show in the status bar.

At the top of the list is "Formatted Page number". Two down from that is "Page Number". Activate both of them and you will see something like this:

 page number
The green circle is the formatted page number (page numbering has restarted at the section break, so this is the third page in the section).

The red circle is the page number, i.e. the actual number with regards to the total number of pages in the document.

As you can see in my image above, the document opened was at Page: 1 of Section: 3, but the cumulative pages in the document is listed as Page: 3 of 3 (the last number noting the number of pages in the entire document).

Your friend should check the Page Number setting in the Customize Status Bar.
