You can check if the USB ports are available in Device Manager (right click My Computer->Manage->Device Manager... look for USB Hub of some description (Intel or VIA depending on what's available on yor laptop).

If USB Hub (as above) is listed check that it doesn't have a small Exclamation icon next to it (yellow). If it does then it's most probably a driver issue that can be fixed by downloading the latest drivers from Acer's website (or trying a Windows Update might pick them up).

If there isn't a USB Hub listing then it may be disabled in BIOS. To access this hit TAB as you're starting the computer (when you get the Acer splash screen), and it should tell you which key to hit to Enter Setup (usually one of the Function keys F1, F2, F10 etc).

Once you're in BIOS setup browse for Integrated Peripherals, then look for USB Controller and make sure it's enabled.

coolhand luke,

Thank you for the comments.

I have checked the usb and it does have a small exclamaton mark.

i have tried to right click and update it.

Can you please tell me how to activate it and start using usb. The yellow is on standard enhanced pci to usb.

Stanard open HCD and usb root hub do not have the yellow marks.

thank you,
Did you try using the chipset drivers for your Acer laptop model? If you have the CD, you can install it from there. Otherwise, get it from the Acer website.

Another thing you can try is installing the driver for your external device. Do you have the driver CD for your external device? If not, try looking it up at their website for one. Installing that should allow you to use that USB device and others.

I have taken the following aproach.

I have istalled the driver software.

then uninstalled the software by cicking on the usb drive appearing in the control panel

then i restarted the laptop then the usb driver installed on its own.

the usb is working properly.

thank you,
