exchange 2003 mail store will not load

Exchange 2003 SP2 server rebooted and mail store willk not load, gives error of compressed files.

I looked at the Priv1.edb and I note it has AC next to the attributes, I have remove the compression option and clicked apply but it seems to be taking an age to apply the job.

My question are, if i cannot mount the store afterwards what are my quickest options to get the email up and running?  To assist I do have the following available;

2nd exchange server built and configured, I could use this but cannot move mailboxes as cannot connect to 1st server.  But I guess i could setup to receive new mail.

I do have a full backup of the database from Backup Exec from the previous night

Could build a new EX2010 box, no benefit over having the 2nd server available I guess?

Point MX record to hosted exchange for a week or so while I sort out the mess!

As you can guesss not DR in place, you can tell management ythat the mail server is on it's last legs but until it fails they are not that bothered!

I guess im leaning towards either setting up the 2nd server or running a restore from last night, just have not had to restore the full mail store before.

I would stop all exchange services and copy of all the exchange data to a new folder just to be safe.

Restart exchange services and do a restore of the exchange database from your previous nights backup.  Your backup software should allow you to apply all log files after restore.  Exchange keeps log files of all activity since last backup.  So after you do the restore it will recreate any emails since last backup and apply them to the store.  

Before you can restore you have to go into the Exchange manager / Information Store properties / Database Tab and at check "This database can be over written by a restore."

I would first recommend you to mount the database on problamatic server :

First restart the Exchange service and then run eseutil /mh on above Exchnage Database
Else stop the Ms exchange service and then run the eseutil /mh on above Exchnage Database

If the eseutil /mh shows "Dirty Shutdown" then check for "Log Required" section and run soft recovery as required

If the Database is clean shutdown then just mount the store
(In case if the Database is clean shutdown but database is still not mounted in this case we need to move the log files )
If you are able to mount the Clean Shutdown database then there is no need to move the log files

Soft Recovery Command if required :
eseutil /r e00 /l "log file path" /d "database file path" /i
