No black ink in printout

I have an HP 2420 printer installed on Vista. It printers colour fine but no black. Cartridge and printer are new. Any ideas how to fix this? I've ran the clean cartridge routine

I forgot to mention that the seals on the black and colour cartridge were removed over a year ago and there has been no printing at all since then because my mate couldn't get it working.

Colour works fine but nothing coming out of the black

when the seals are broken, the ink cartridges can dry out, especially the ink the reaches the nozzles that spray ink on the page. If the ink in the nozzles is dried out you may not be able to get any ink out of the cartridge. You can try rubbing they electronic copper contacts (where the nozzle is located), with rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball, to see if that may help but most likely you will not be able to use the black cartridge any more.

I'd agree that the black cartridge was defective from new - it should know if ink isn't flowing, and then flag this as a problem...

This obviously isn't happening...

Either that or it's an actual device problem - possible knowing HP's low end devices.
