What do I do to restart my Toshiba laptop

I have a Toshiba laptop. The hard drive went out. I tried resetting it to factory settings just to see if anything would come around but the hard drive still wouldn't boot. I have all my files backed up so I didn't lose anything.

So I installed a new hard drive and here is my question. Can I boot it from a Windows 7 boot disc or do I have to totally reinstall Windows 7 (or possibly Windows XP) from the initial install discs?

you would need to re-install. It's best to have a fresh install on a new drive if the other drive is in bad shape. ghosting over a bad drive isn't the best thing to do if it's bad beyond recovery.

If you have recovery CDs you might be able to use those. Most laptops for the last several years, though, have used recovery partitions, which means that a new HD won't have that partition.

I would call Toshiba if I were you, though.  Even if you're out of warranty, they might be able to point you in the right direction for getting a recovery partition.

It's a Satellite A505, purchased in November of 2009. I've had a lot of computers but have never had one go down this quickly.

It didn't come with the operating system discs. I do have 'XP'. Can I install that or is the recommendation for a new install suggested for Windows 7 since that's what was on it?
If you have a retail copy of another OS (or even Win7) then you should be fine.  You might check the Toshiba website to ensure they have drivers for XP, though, for that specific model.

Also, if you're interested in trying this (I have no idea of how reputable this site might be), you can apparently download recovery DVDs for various A505 models here:

Thanks for the link. I'll definitely check it out before I do anything else.
Here's another link to a set of recovery dvds (no download, I think, just delivery) but with Vista and not 7.  Did your laptop originally come with Vista?

spinsouthAuthor Commented:
No, it originally came with Windowsn 7.

I did contact Toshiba and they're sending me the disc to get me up and running. Thanks for the help!
