iTunes 10.2.1 Crashing on Windows 7

Just installed iTunes 10.2.1 (64-bit version) on a Windows 7 laptop. Seemed fine at first, but then I noticed iTunes kept locking up as I was ripping CDs. I tried to download and install an earlier version of iTunes but then kept getting an error message that the ITL file was created using a more recent version.

How can I fix this?

Install the latest version of Java runtime.  iTunes runs best on the latest version of Java.  Crashing issues often are caused by issues or comparabilities with older Java builds.

Thanks. I didn't realize iTunes was dependent on Java. I assumed it was all coded in .NET.
iTunes is NOT dependent on Java. I have lots of deployments and they don't have Java on them.

Thanks Matt. Any other idea why iTunes might be crashing?
Are you using 12.2.1.1 version? That's the latest release.

Opps. That's 10.2.1.1...
It's 10.2.1 which I assumed was the very latest, since I downloaded it from iTunes.com just on Saturday.
Was it working 'before'?  What type of CD or DVD drive are you using?  Do you get the same hang when using other CD riping tools:

This is virgin laptop running Windows 7. Saturday was the first day I tried installing iTunes and ripping music CDs. Don't know what brand of DVD/CD drive is in this laptop.

No, have not tried other CD ripping tools yet.
