Linux ubuntu error

Hi,

I have been attempting to execute the showkey and loadkeys applications via the terminal in ubuntu 10.10. Though for some reason I get the following error.

"Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console"

Any idea how to fix this? Thanks.

It is definitely an application on the system as it can be found from the main kbd package.
