Car tracking system for commercial use - is this already present ?

Hello Guys,

I'm wondering is there a ready-made solution to track your car ?

i.e. implant some sort of system (GPS or otherwise), and you would basically be able to know where your car is over the internet ? Perhaps also provide information about the car journey or the speed of the car or do statistics, etc

The solution would provide the position of the car using GPS or via internet. Security and encryption from device-to-website is a big concern.

I'm NOT looking to buy such solution, I'm hoping to make it as a university year-long project, and am just wondering if this solution is already present ?

Yep, a Google search for "iPhone location tracking" returns lots of good stuff. UPS has had this capability for its trucks for many years. This article looked very interesting:

Thank you for your help and answer. This is useful, but I'm asking about a car.

let me simply the question, if you have a car, and you want to know where the car is, say if it got stolen, Is there some sort of device that you can implant in your car which can send the location of the car to a website/machine where you can access and know where the car is ?

I believe there are rental car companies using such systemsand some threaten to charge extra if you are caught going out of a defined area or using the car recklessly like speeding.

OK, so this for co-orperate use, but it's not for normal user (like me and you) use, is it ?

I don't know. I just read about it in an internet article on how rental car companies are tracking their cars.

I have also read about units that can be added to allow parents to do thesame thing.
