Printing Photos Error

Hello,

When trying to print a picture from Microsoft Photo Viewer or Microsoft Office Picture Manager I get the following error window popup... "your pictures can't be printed because this error occurred"

I believe this is specific to the wizard the offers your print layout options (4x5 sheets, full page etc.).
To make matters worse, it repeats the box continuously, so I have to keep hitting ESC in rapid succession to just clear the boxes out to get back to the photo.

I do not see this error when opening the JPG in the QuickTime Photo viewer and attempt to print.

Does anybody have any ideas or approaches to this problem?

Thanks,
Brian

The photo wizard did not ship with some version of windows OS.  See:

Hi Brian

You said you get this error:
"your pictures can't be printed because this error occurred".

What error occurred?  Can you be any more specific?
Also ... What operating system and what version of MS Office do you have?

Okay to clarify, I am working on a Windows 7 64 bit OS with Office 2007.  (not sure on the exact edition - pro or standard... pretty sure it's standard)

The error message "your pictures can't be printed because this error occurred" is the only message in the boxes that popup.  When I try to print - go to "File", "Print" -  the print window pops up to choose printer settings (layout, quantity, specify printer) then, immediately,  this error box pops up multiple times.

This problem just appeared suddenly on Monday afternoon.  We were able to print just fine, then these issues started to occur.

Looking around on Google searches, I found that other people are having similar issues, they apparently fixed the issue by replacing the photowiz.dll file in the System32 folder.  This did not work for us. (maybe an issues with 32 bit vs 64 bit)  When I replaced the file and clicked on Print, nothing happened.  I put everything back and still have this issue.

Thank you.

What system changes were made Monday?  Is that when your OS was upgraded to Win7?  That would make sense because  (according to the Microsoft forum link below), the photo wizard is not included in Win7.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/why-photo-printing-wizard-not-included-in-windows/ac47fe9f-2504-4ed2-806d-8a0c86d89cac

No upgrade... this system is a laptop that came pre-installed with Win7.

This is an interesting point though... why would this laptop have photowiz.dll on it then?  would it have traveled / been installed by another program (like Office)?
I have Win7 Pro on my desktop and I don't have any such file as photowiz.dll, and my pictures do print properly and have the same "print wizard" as this the laptop tries to start (but errors out)

I don't mean to be insulting, but have you really looked carefully at the linked page to which you are directing PCNSTech?

It's just another one of those that gets returned in googled searches for DLL problems and tries to sell you a "fix it all" utility that may or may not screw up the computer even more.  These sites get themselves indexed in google, latch onto the search term, run it through a PHP or some other type of script, and dynamically fill in the blanks in a re-usable page with technobabble crap so it looks like a bespoke "fix" utility.

Note the two instances of "photowiz.dll" in the URL (after removing the unique identifier that they stick on the end to track where you came from):

http://www.restoreguard.com/p/file-Photowiz.dll.html?keyword=Photowiz.DLL

Well, I was having problems with THIS DLL file, so I replaced the name in the URL:

http://www.restoreguard.com/p/file-Bullshit.dll.html?keyword=BullShit.DLL

Notice how it dynamically adapts to inform you that it has a tool to fix that DLL also.  They must have a huge repository of files at their disposal, and some with very odd names ;-)

The issue in hand is that the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" (the Windows XP ancestor of the later Windows Vista and 7 Microsoft Photo Viewer, and actually part of the Windows XP Explorer "shell"), the Microsoft Office Picture Manager, and a few other applications, all insist on calling the "Photo Print Wizard" to offer you layout options instead of just printing the damned image.

Somewhere down the line there has been an oversight that has led to an incompatibility issue with the version of this DLL in Windows 7.  The most quoted resolution I have found is to replace the DLL with a version from an earlier version of Windows and "register" it with the command:
regsvr32 photowiz.dll

Unfortunately I am not in the position to verify these apparently successful suggestions found in google searches because I do not have Windows Vista or 7, and I have not yet read any similarly successful fixes by others using 64-bit Windows, which will no doubt complicate things further by throwing a 32-bit DLL into the works.  I do not wish to be held responsible for any damage caused to PCNSTech's computer through giving the thumbs-up to other peoples' suggestions, and so I decided to back out of this question and just monitor it.

Sorry PCNSTech.  I can't offer any solid suggestions.  I was puzzled about the absence of any detail in the "error", which is why I entered this question.
BillDL,
You may or may not be correct about the site.  I have used similar sites in the past, when all else has failed, with great success. I recommended the site only after googling for negative feedack on the site.  Further, I have Norton 360 which notifies me if the site I am visiting is a possible phishing site.....and Norton did not note any problems with the site in that regard.   However, PCNSTec should recognize that there are no guarantees, and should have adequate backup before making any changes to his laptop.
BillDL is right on target... I found that when I used that link, I immediately got warnings from Trend Micro that the website was unsafe and known to be dangerous.  I took caution and looked further into the site and came to the same conclusion.  Even clicking on the "fix tool" to download, Trend Micro continued to warn about the safety of this site.

I apologize puppydogbuddy, but this site is definitely NOT a good recommendation.  I appreciate the effort though.

As far as the issue of this Photo Wizard, I agree with the with BillDL's findings.  I found the same article about re-registering the DLL.  I will be attempting this fix as soon as I have access to the laptop again.  (probably Monday)

Hope to have good news to report on Monday night.
FYI
I just tested the site again with Norton Safe Search and no problems were found.
You know, I decided to ignore the follow-up to my comments about the link and allow others to concentrate on the more important matter in hand, ie. trying to get PCNSTech's issue fixed.  I'm not worried about what I said in my comment and will not withdraw it, apologise for making it, nor concede on my observations about that linked page.

Let me clarify, seeing as this has been continued.  My issue was NOT with the actual page/site, but the fact that the link was offered without verifying a thing about it.

I already demonstrated how this type of page just inserts the search term into it in several places to give the viewer the impression that they have arrived on a page that is going to offer them a specific fix for their exact problem.

Look at the original link given:
http://www.restoreguard.com/p/file-Photowiz.dll.html?keyword=Photowiz.DLL&gclid=CKWHnvyNm6gCFYjt7QodW0YgIA

The "&gclid=CKWHnvyNm6gCFYjt7QodW0YgIA" part isn't needed, and is presumably an identification of where the viewer was referred from.

Go here:
http://www.restoreguard.com/p/file-Photowiz.dll.html?keyword=Photowiz.DLL
and it is hardly remarkable that the page is offering you a bespoke cure for your "photowiz.dll" problem.

Replace both instances of "Photowiz.dll" in the above URL with some other "problem" and click the link, example:
http://www.restoreguard.com/p/file-IDidNotResearchBeforePostingLink.duh.html?keyword=IDidNotResearchBeforePostingLink.duh

So, the program I am about to download and install is "Restore Guard" and it is going to cure my issue?

Wrong!!!  The program that will download, when the link works, is "PC Health Adivisor" by ParetoLogic.  The deliberately obfuscated JavaScript at the bottom of the page's source code is a URL to the purchase site for ParetoLogic, and it's pretty clear by the name of the installer package when saved that it is not a "Restore Guard" product.  They are resellers (affiliates if you like) who make money by acting as affiliates, not writing software, so it is in their interest to get as many people onto their pages under false pretences of offering a fix for specific problems.

False Pretences?  Yes!!
"The repair tool is an effective solution to thoroughly clean and optimize your system. It is created to diagnose and repair the exact root cause of your problem."

Did you look at the "If your problem hasn't been fixed with the solution above. Try the second solution. Click Here" under the "Debug Notes" on the page?  For the HTML-challenged, the # means "reload THE SAME page":
<a href="#">Click Here</a>

Did you try posting a comment to add to the really credible list of users giving positive feedback?

The photo of Kevin, from Technical Support, is named "Kyle.jpg".

OK, so ParetoLogic is a reputable company and PC Health Advisor has won some awards, but it is described by ParetoLogic themselves as (paraphrasing here) "a cleanup and omptimisation suite of utilities with some ability to fix common Windows errors and built-in malware detection and prevention".
http://www.paretologic.com/products/pchealthadvisor/index.aspx
http://www.pchealthadvisor.com/

So the "Restore Guard" is a cheap, amateurish, and crafty way of convincing people that what amounts to "PC Cleanup and Optimisation" is going to fix their "photowiz.dll" issue, or whatever other search term was regurgitated onto their template page.

PCNSTech

You no doubt saw the google pages that suggested replacing version 6.x "photowiz.dll" with a 5.x version.  Note that this will be a Windows XP version of the file.

I seem to have got a mixed bag of differing comments as to whether this Photo Print Wizard came with Windows 7.  Some pages I read say it came with the first release, so perhaps one of the later releases built with the released Service Pack removed it.  I suppose it is possible that Office 2007 installed it, but I doubt this.

As far as the 32-bit vs 64-bit potential issue goes, 64-bit dll's like this would be in the C:\Windows\System32 folder, whereas 64-bit versions would usually be in "Windows 32-bit On Windows 64-bit" folder: C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Perhaps that's where the compatibility issue stems from, but as I mentioned earlier I am unable to check or test anything as I do not have Windows 7.  I wish I did have.

Sorry for dredging up the "link" stuff again, but I needed to clarify what I meant and explain why I mentioned it in the first place.

Bill
Sorry, a typo:

64-bit dll's like this would be in the C:\Windows\System32 folder, whereas 32-bit versions would usually be in "Windows 32-bit On Windows 64-bit" folder: C:\Windows\SysWOW64.

You're welcome PCNSTech.  Glad you got it sorted out, but I wish the cure could have been less radical.
this is it... a reload of Windows was the only way I was able to resolve the issue
So to recap.

Rollback or reinstall.

The old sledgehammer to crack a nut approach.  Nice. Thats worth paying money for.

Why don't you ask a new question about your own specific problems, add it to the most appropriate zones, and see whether your payment has been worth it.  In this instance there was only one other expert other than me who commented in the question.  Most likely your new question will attract more experts, and amongst the comments you might just get a solution.
