Co-existence of Groupwise 8 and Exchange 2010
In an organization migrating to Exchange 2010 from Goupwise 8 with multiple branches, what is the best way to allow the continued use of Groupwise in some of the branches that will not be moved to AD and Exchange at the same time?
I have already read about using the Groupwise Gateway and an Exchange 2003 server in the mix, and am wondering if there are any other ways to route messages between the two systems for a period of co-existence.

To the outside world the email addresses are all to a single domain, i.e. user@mycompany.com. I think you are saying that in order for this to work we would need to have email addresses changed, to user@xx.mycompany.com, user2@yy.mycompany.com etc.?

I've found out a bit more about the configuration and now realize that the incoming mail won't be a problem as there is a smart host that will be distributing mail to the appropriate server for the users as it comes in from outside the domain.
However, now I need to find a way to be able to transfer email between the GW and Exchange users within the domain. Does this put me back into the requirement for GW Gateway and Exchange 2003 solution?

The Exchange Gateway solution basically 'connects' the two systems... so it should be able to correctly route the outbound message from one system to the other...
Playing with the domains would also still work, but you would need to have all the users set up on the Exchange side... Exchange would forward the internal messages to GW (via SMTP out to the smarthost, then in to the GWIA) and GW would send all messages out through the GWIA (through the smarthost, then back to Exchange)....
Not sure which is easiest and there may be other solutions, of course....

Does the org use the same email domain name for all users? Are those 'groups' of users on separate GW POs? You could set up separate child domains for the users, like xxx.domain.com and yyy.domain.com, so you could have separate SMTP gateways handling the different email, then just send between Exch and GW... again, that's a bit of work, but it is possible...
