How do you add/configure a new HOST and pointer on MD3200i?
Hello,
I have a SAN Dell MD3200i running a RAID 5 for 3 ESX Host Servers and I have added 4 HD running a RAID 10
Virtual Disk "3"
Virtual Disk status: Optimal
Capacity: 837.371 GB
Virtual Disk world-wide identifier: 67:82:bc:b0:00:04:a3:a2:00 :00:07:c5: 4d:a5:57:8 6
Subsystem ID (SSID): 2
RAID level: 10
I'm needing to add two physical host (Windows Server 2008 Enterprise) that I will be using Microsoft Failover clustering between the two servers. I need to share the RAID 10 between these two servers, but I do not understand how to add them on my SAN under mapping. I also don't understand how to configure my MS cluster iSCSI Initiator.
Thanks,
nimdatx

ASKER CERTIFIED SOLUTION
membership
This solution is only available to members.
To access this solution, you must be a member of Experts Exchange.
After you connect to the array with the iSCSI initiator from the Windows 2008 Servers, you will have to go back to the array (MD Storage Manager), create hosts with this new iqn . You should then map the new raid 10 VD map it to the new hosts. Once you do this, you should be able to see the disks show up under disk management.

hanccocka, Thanks so much!!!!
I'm going to give it a try in the morning. I'll post my results soon.
Thanks,

Thanks,

be very careful and DO NOT assign access to the ESX LUNs! from the Windows Servers.
ASKER
Firstly you must create the LUNs for the new physical Windows 2008 servers, that you require for clustering.

It is then important to make a note of the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator names from the two Windows 2008 servers, and ONLY allocate these iSCSI Initiator names to have access to the LUNs.

Usually you map these initiators to the LUN. Make sure that the ESX hosts do not also connect to these LUNs.
I do not see them within my VM Client Server
In the Microsoft iSCSI initiator on the Windows 2008 server, you must specifiy the SAN IP address or addresses?
Which IP Address would this be?
How does everything look so far?
Thanks,
nimdatx

It is then important to make a note of the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator names from the two Windows 2008 servers, and ONLY allocate these iSCSI Initiator names to have access to the LUNs.

Usually you map these initiators to the LUN. Make sure that the ESX hosts do not also connect to these LUNs.
I do not see them within my VM Client Server
In the Microsoft iSCSI initiator on the Windows 2008 server, you must specifiy the SAN IP address or addresses?
Which IP Address would this be?
How does everything look so far?
Thanks,
nimdatx
Lot of information here, let me have a look through it.
I've had a quick look, let me have a further look.
IP address of the SAN (MD3200i)
I've had a quick look, let me have a further look.
IP address of the SAN (MD3200i)
ASKER
You say my IP address of my SAN, so this is what I think you mean?
My iSCSI Host ports:
Raid Controller Module 0, Port 0 = 192.168.130.101 – 255.255.255.0 – No DG
Raid Controller Module 0, Port 1 = 192.168.131.101 – 255.255.255.0 – No DG
Raid Controller Module 0, Port 2 = 192.168.132.101 – 255.255.255.0 – No DG
Raid Controller Module 0, Port 3 = 192.168.133.101 – 255.255.255.0 – No DG
Raid Controller Module 1, Port 0 = 192.168.130.102 – 255.255.255.0 – No DG
Raid Controller Module 1, Port 1 = 192.168.130.102 – 255.255.255.0 – No DG
Raid Controller Module 1, Port 2 = 192.168.130.102 – 255.255.255.0 – No DG
Raid Controller Module 1, Port 3 = 192.168.130.102 – 255.255.255.0 – No DG
Now, my two physical servers (Win2k8 Enterprise) that will be setup as a failover cluster are on the 1.0 subnet, so I enabled another physical NIC, plugged into my two dedicated SCSI switches and assigned a static IP address 192.168.130.50, 255.255.255.0, DG none on emrdatabase1 (server) and tested iSCSI initiator again.
I went to discovery tab and entered 192.168.130.101 (SAN) and I was able to see target Dell powervault md3200i. I then auto set volumes and devices. When I went to Disk management I saw 837.371 GB, RAID 10, EMRDATA. I did not see ESX LUN, which is good in my mind.
Is this the way to do it? I didn't want to proceed until I get your thoughts. Another thing....when I went to vSphere and looked at all me ESX servers networking properties (just to double check everything) I noticed that under two of my ESX server vSwitch properties - Network adapters, I see Opserved IP addresses: 192.168.130.50, which is the Static IP I assigned to the second nic on the physical server (Win2k8 Enterprise). Not sure why this happened, since I did nothing within ESX.
Thanks,
nimdatx

Yes, that's good and working.
So you need to format that disk/volume with the correct filing system NTFS from that Windows host.
Only one Windows 2008 Server can see the actual disk at one time. This is normal, and how clustering works.
Connect the second Windows 2008 Server, and see if you can see the disk, now this will appear at present as the 837GB disk, but it will probably appear as Unknown/RAW format, and that's normal, until clustering is up and running.
So now you can complete the Microsoft Clustering Wizard and add the disk resource.
and then add the second node to the cluster, and then you should be able to add a Clustered File Share on the disk. and test failover.

Thank so much.
What about the observed IP address range? What is that?
Can you help me understand how the HOST port communicate with VSpere, these physical servers and my LAN 1.0 subnet? That confuses me so much.
I can not believe I got this far with virtualization and now clustering. Thanks so much.

In the Microsoft iSCSI initiator on the Windows 2008 server, you must specifiy the SAN IP address or addresses?
