Trimming background for a clean female model pic

I am trying to trim the background of an image so that all I have is the model.  Now the problem I am having is I am trying to keep as much hair on the model's head without trimming her hair when removing the background.  How do I do this in an easier fashion?  It appears to come out sloppy when I go around trying to trim the background and try to avoid the hair.  Thanks!

The way to do this is to use the Extract tool. You can remove the background without even losing a single hair provided the photo is sharp and you work on a magnified view.

The Extract Tool is not in the regular Tools palette but in the Filters menu.

    - Open the photo in PS and click Filter > Extract to open a copythe image in the Extract window.

    - Click the Zoom Tool in the Tool bar on the top left of the Extract window and click the image to zoom in as much as needed.

    - Click the Edge Highlighter Tool at the top of the Tool Bar and trace the outline of the hair. Completely cover stray hair including the gaps between hairs where background is visible.

    - Once the hair portion is traced, contine to trace the outline of the rest of the model that you wish to retain making sure that the traced outine is closed.

    - Now click the Fill Tool (only becomes enabled when the traced outline forms a closed loop) and click inside the traced outline to fill the portion that you want to Extract.

    - Click on preview to see how the extracted image looks.

To get the best results use as small a brush size as possible while making sure your outline is roughly half on the image/hair that you wish to retain and half on the background.

With a little practice you can extract even a single strand if hair with this wonderful tool!

    Good Luck!
