HI - everytime I run an incremental backup on Exchange it jumps another 40GB in size. Surely this can't be right?

Could you please explain how do you run the backup and which Exchange version are you using?

Also, what is the size of your full Exchange backup please?

    HI expone,

I'm running the in-built "ntbackup.exe". I select the 'Microsoft Information Store" and backup to a network drive. It's set to 'Incremental".

The information store itself is only about 45GB, hence my annoyance at at incremental backup now standing at 139GB!!

You have probably selected "Append to backup", which is a default option in ntbackup. Hence, I would suggest that you create another ntbackup job and do not select "append" option during the wizard.

This will keep each backup file on 40GB, however it will overwrite it every time you run the backup, so you will be vulnerable if Exchange fails during the backup (because you are overwriting your only backup copy).

Therefore, you can create one more Exchange ntbackup job and then alternate between those two, so you will always have a full backup copy.
