Lost Space in SBS 2008

Hi All,

I have a funny one where a server has a 250Gb D partition, it contains 88Gb of data but it only has 20Gb free.

Now I have disabled VSC which helpded a little but the only thing I can put this down to is:

"D:\System Volume Information\SRM"

But I am a little nervous doing anything to this folder,  does any one have any ideas what i can do to reclaim this space.

Other things to check for are to see where the page file is, as well as clearling old system restore files (both of those are usually on C, but some administrators move them to the data drive if C is running out of room).  Also check in the disk management to make sure the entire partition is being used.

Page file is on its own dedicated Partition.
The fact that you have a SRM folder indicates that quotas are or have been set on that machine.  Have you checked to make sure a quota has not been set on the drive?

before you can decide how to clear and reclaim space, you *have* to know where it is.

Use a program such as treesize or windirstat to find out what is taking up the extra space. Remember that 2008 has UAC, so you'll need to "run as administrator" to get a more accurate space mapping.

Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have the following updates:

Tree Size shows total amount of files as 92.6Gb
Treesize run as Administrator
Quota Management is disabled on all drives
Disabled VSS

The only folder Treesize is unable to scan is the SRM, which makes me think the space is there, or I have a disk fault of some kind.

So in short windows sees a 250Gb drive, windows reports 30Gb free. However Treesize and manual calculations show no more then 93Gb in use.

Any other ideas?

Dan

The following (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555941) shows you how to get a command prompt up that can access the system volume information and allow you to take a look at what is in there and modify or delete it.  This should allow you to see if the disk usage is in there.
You might also want to download the sysinternals utilities (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb842062), as there are a couple of utilities there (disk usage and disk view) that might give you more information.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delay been snowed under.

Still cant find any reason as too why the space is being used in the

"D:\System Volume Information\SRM"

I did look at Systernals but i wasnt quite sure what I was looking for.
