FTP and Website Hosting Development

I am very very new to website development and working with a hosting provider so I am sure that this question will seem easy but just trying to get my head around it.

Basically I have a website hosting company right now that for example hosts my website: www.myurl.com. How can I go about posting images to my FTP server  in the folder /images without it being indexed by google or search engines if I am just in the development process.

I have read about robots.txt and also that if someone was to know my folder structure if I put in an index.html file in the /images folder it would display that in the browser. Are there other ways of storing files on the FTP without being indexed or found other than these two methods? I am trying not do a password protected folder just create a development region on the same server.

Thanks in advance.

Most hosts have a ftp public access folder and a private.  The same for the http public and private folders.  You can actually block access with seperate .htaccess files in each folder, that cause the server itself to prevent direct web access to each folder.

Here is a link to everything you would need to know about .htaccess and preventing access.
