Windows 2008 Server Became Un-Activated

I setup a windows 2008 server about 6 months ago.  Today it just stopped working.  Once I was able to get it front of it I realized that the Windows Key was nt activated.  Now, I know this was done 6 months ago when the server was rolled out.  What would cause a key to become no longer activated?

The key that I am using is part of volume licensing.

Sounds like the server couldn't find KMS on the network.  The KMS volume key checks in with KMS every 6 months.  It's a small program that runs on the network for Windows and Office when using KMS instead of MAK keys.
