Making image transparent may not be possible in power point.

But making a slide background transparent is possible as indicated by shreedhar.

Try inserting a shape, for example a rectangle the same size as your photo.

Now with the shape selected use the drawing tools - format pane to select the shape fill on the shape styles pane.  Select picture and navigate to your picture ...Insert

Right click the shape, now select format picture | Fill | Picture or texture fill |

Select the transparency slider as required.

If I'm using an image from the internet with a white background, I just want to make the white background transparent.

Is something like that possible in PowerPoint?

SOrry not very clear:

1. Select the image.
2. The picture tools | Fromat tab will be presented at the right of the tab area.
3. Find the adjust pane on this tab and the color drop down thereon
4. Select the drop down | Set transparent color option.
5. Cursor changes and when clicked on the color you want made transparent then all of that color is made the same as the slide background.

Any better?

For what it's worth, PowerPoint 2010 also has a new Background Removal Tool. It's on the Picture Tools Format tab that shows up when you select the picture.
