Hyper V error when adding new machine or base VHD's

Suddenly one of our Hyper V servers wont allow us to add new servers. Each time I try to create a new (from scratch) or use an existing base VHD, it presents me with an error I have never seen before.

'The requested operation could not be completed due to a file system limitation'

We have no file limitations, there is plenty of free RAM, there is over 100GB of local disc space, so not sure why this has happened. The server is a little behind on patches, but cant believe that is it (will be completing those over the weekend).

No changes have been made to the server to result in this error. I have rebooted the server as a initial test and no joy.

Any help would be appreciated.

There are a few things to look at which could be the cause:
Try adding the VM with the files in another directory other than the default.
Make sure disk compression is not turned on.

I found a more lengthy explanation here: http://angrytechnician.wordpress.com/2011/02/23/vssadmin-is-dead-long-live-diskshadow/#more-3135

Disk compression....is that linked to the root only or can it be linked to sub folders independantly? Compression is definitely off for the C drive as a whole. I will try dropping the VM in a new location.

If compression is enabled, some folders could be compressed. Let us know what you find.
