Hi Experts,

we are planning for upgrade of our exchange organization from 2003 exchange to 2007 exchange so i wll open few other questions regarding this upgrade but as of now
I want to upgrade my OWA first to 2007 standard edition which is currently running on E2K3 Enterprise edtion with SP2. please let me know
1. can i go with inplace upgrade from E2K3 to E2K7 ?
2. If yes then how and if no then what OS i should install on other server where i will install E2K7 ?
3. What role i will install on new E2K7 server (i believe CAS).
4. and most important, will it works with E2K3 back end servers because upgrade of those will take some more time ?

thank you in advance for your help folks.

Hi

1. No inplace upgrade. Must be a brand new server.
2. I suggest the latest : w2k8 r2 (std) - Disable IPV6.
3. If you want only that server to be client access server, yes, the CAS Role. Do not  install the other roles on the same server
4. Exchange 2007 CAS will proxy / redirect to the Exchange 2003 servers. That works only in your case, if you install the CAS role ALONE on the server.

Configure the OWA settings : certificate, URL, and so on.
Test it internally.
If everything works, just redirect your DNS records and/or firewall redirections, to have the 2007 as OWA "front-end" (we do not more use the Front-End term in 2007)

Wow. Just follow the technet part of the 2007 CAS role setup in a mixed organization.
Don't have the link right now, the customer proxy where i'm currently working is a little bit to restrictive.. doesn't seem to like the technet ... ^^

thanks.
last question.

If i transition it to E2K10 directly will it work with E2K3 backend servers ?

just a thought as we already have E2K7 license for backend server but for OWA we need to purchase one.

Yes and No

Exchange 2010 "Redirects the clients" to the Exchange 2003 url. So yo're OWa interface will not be really different, except from the login screen.

your answer is looking doubtfull.
are you sure about that ?

yes.
when installing 2010 with a 2003 environment, you specify a legacyURL, where 2010 will redirect the client : The client will have a page that asks him to connect to this legacy url.
