Exchange backup scenario (RecoverServer)

Hi All

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but just wanted to double check with the experts :)

We're running two node SCC cluster in SiteA. In SiteB, there is an SCR target.

I was thinking about the backup strategy...

Would I be right in thinking that we need to only backup the Exchange virtual server so that we have all the mailbox data.

The C: and System State of the physical nodes of the cluster and also the SCR target don't need to be backed up, as if we lose the actual server, then we can use /M:RecoverServer?

And when using  this mode, all we need to is just physically rebuild the machine with the same name and disk drives. Once we initiate RecoverServer, it will pull all other info from AD. Am I correct in thinking that this will install and configure Exchange  exactly how it was?

you are right man you just need to backup virtual server and systems state of both the servers.

But what's the advantage of backing up the System State of the servers? Surely, if we use the /M:RecoverServer switch to rebuild the server, all the info is taken from AD?

    Accepted Solution

Their is not harm in getting system systate backup unless you have time and tape constraints.System state back up following things. So incase you need to restore registry changes or IIS you might need to have system state backup.

    System Registry
    COM + Database
    Certificate Services
    Active Directory
    IIS Metabase
