I have an issue with my BB where I can't seem to get back to the home screen.  I get the following error everytime I start my phone after taking out the battery and attempting to reset:

JVM 517

I can't get anywhere with this phone.  This is on a Sprint network.

If a full battery and SIM re-seat is ineffective, you will probably need to reload the BlackBerry device OS...

    Accepted Solution

Battery pull and SIM re-seat won't work, I'm afraid. The software is corrupted. This is the BB KB article:

    JVM Error 517

    Doc ID : KB10875
    Last Modified : 2007-03-08
    Document Type : Support

    BlackBerry® device

The BlackBerry device displays JVM Error 517.

The file system on the BlackBerry device has become corrupted.

If not already installed, download BlackBerry Device Software and BlackBerry Desktop Manager from the wireless service provider web site. For more information, see KB12532.
Install BlackBerry Desktop Manager and then install the BlackBerry Device Software.
Use Application Loader to reload the software on the BlackBerry device. For more information on running Application Loader, refer to KB03621.

    Hi vulture,

What did you do with this in the end?

    Expert Comment

JVM 517 Error happens when the software on the BB device has become corrupted. If you are trying to reload the device software and cannot seem to connect the device, you will need to search for, download and install the JL_Cmder v1.9.0. This batch file will allow you to either wipe your BB device or reset to factory settings. I hope this helps.
