XP shortcut to Windows 2008R2 share not working when using CNAME

I am trying to set up a shortcut in the form \\CNAME\share. The CNAME record points to a Windows 2008R2 server.

The shortcut works on Windows7 PC's but not on XP, I believe due to the level of SMB1 & SMB2 support.

I have found a doc that explains the problem (http://homeworksblog.wordpress.com/2010/08/06/connecting-smb-share-with-cname/) but am wondering if there are any easier solutions out there.

My goal is to achieve a level of fault tolerance where we can redirect  shortcuts by way of aliases.
Expert advice would be appreciated

Found a better descriiption of the solution at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff660057(WS.10).aspx.

Simply adding the DisableStrictNameChecking Registry Key and rebooting did the trick.
