I have a Dell 400 Vostro and currently have windows XP 32 bit operating system. If I change
the operating system to a Vista or Windows 7 with 64 bit operating system will my computer
reconize 6gb of ram? And if yes would my drivers and such be able to handle the upgrade from
XP?

Yes, it would be able to use 6GB, however, your system only supports a max of 4GB of RAM:

One other problem is since Dell never shipped the 400 with a 64-bit OS, they don't have 64-bit drivers for the hardware in a 400.  Since you can't put more than 4GB in it, it would be kind of pointless to go to a 64-bit OS, but if you decided you wanted to, you would be in for an adventure tracking down drivers for your devices from various device manufacturers and/or other similar Dell computers that use the same devices AND have 64-bit drivers available.
