Exchange server - configure outbound email relay?

We recently purchased a barracuda spam and virus filter, want to route all out-bound email from our exchange server through the barracuda, how do i configure this in exchange?
1 Solution

That really depends on which version of Exchange.

If Exchange 2003, you need to use an SMTP connector inside the Connectors folder of the appropriate routing group. If you already have one, then modify it accordingly and change it to relay email out via a smart host (entering the DNS name or IP in brackets [] of the Barracuda).

Make sure the address space is set to '*' with a cost of 1.

If Exchange 2007 or 2010, then you need a send connector, which can be created in the Management Console > Organization Config > Hub Transport > Send Connectors tab. If you have an existing one then either delete it and add a new one, or modify the config of the existing one to enable the Smart Host setting.

These versions make it slightly easier because you can pick to create a connector of type "Internet" and the wizard handles the rest. See here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998814%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx.
