Current email on Outlook 2007 no longer shows up when off-site

I have ten users that take their in XP & Win7 laptops offsite and connect over their Sprint Wireless modems, execute the Sonicwall Net Extender SSL-VPN which connects to the firewall and provides access to the active directory environment where we have a Win 2008 and Win 2003 server and Exchange 2007.

All user exchange mailboxes are stored on the Windows 2008/Exchange 2007 server in our facility.

One user running XP Pro and Outlook 2007 mentioned when he is offsite with no VPN connection and he opens outlook, he doesn’t see mail that he received that day while in the office. The VPN is slow so many times he will work offline in Outlook creating email and then sending that mail when he gets to the office the next morning.

What would cause mail he received that day to not display when working offline?

Yes he sees email, but the latest email he sees in Outlook is from three weeks ago. This is very strange since he was at the office a few hours earlier and had all his mail in Outlook at that time.
