My guest operating system is Windows XP and I am running a .NET application.  Among other things the desktop background is showing through as can be seen here

This doesn't happen on real operating systems so I'm guessing it is something to do with virtualization

is it the blue background you are referring ,to, virtualization shouldnt affect it, other than if video resolution is set incorrectly.

I have installed vmware tools.  I have not heard of the vide driver I will look into it now.  All I know is it is some version of vmware server is it possible to find out from the guest?

It is the blue background showing through the text boxes as well as the funny gray colors.  Note where the blue background is showing through there should actually be up and down buttons.  How can I tell if the video resolution is set incorrectly?

just check the display properties in the virtual computer.

Also how do you access the virtual machine?

At the moment I'm running at the maximum possible resolution of 3200x1770.  The problem also occurs at 2560x1600.  I access using VNC

it could be vnc.

check the colours in the Server Console or via RDP.

Thats a very high resolution

It also happens under Team Viewer. 3200 is very high but 2560 I would have thought is more in the range of normal

not for normal use, i dont know many office users that have 27" flat panel ips displays.

check rdp and server console display.

Yes that was the console.  Still happens under lower display resolution with 32 bit color and updated tools

very odd, not seen this issue myself, vmware server is a very old product, no longer supported, and is end of life in 1 month in June 2011.

Is it all applications, including Windows apps like calculator?

It just seems to be this single product which is written in .NET

I agree it is very strange

You could also try running this VMware Virtual machine in VMware Player or Workstation (player is free), and check if the same issue is there.
